Xuanwu Shrine

Originating in ancient animal totem worship, Xuanwu deity is a combination of a turtle and a snake, representing the north in Chinese cosmology and also the God of Water. In Cangdong Village the Xuanwu shrine is located directly to the north of the village. Along with the banyan trees at the two entrances on either side of the village and the Dajiang deity’s shrine in front of the village, it defines the boundaries of the village. Villagers also believe that Xuanwu is the ‘Xuanmu Deity,’ who can protect the women and children in the village.
